Planning Your Perfect St. Lucia Wedding: A Florist's Guide

Choosing the Right Flowers for Your Venue

When planning a St. Lucia wedding, the venue plays a crucial role in flower selection. Beach weddings require hardy blooms that can handle salt air and wind, while garden ceremonies offer more flexibility with delicate flowers.

Best Flowers for Caribbean Weddings

Some of our most popular wedding flowers include:

  • Hibiscus - The national flower of St. Lucia, perfect for tropical bouquets
  • Birds of Paradise - Dramatic and exotic, ideal for statement arrangements
  • Ginger Flowers - Fragrant and long-lasting, great for centerpieces
  • Frangipani - Beautiful and aromatic, perfect for ceremony arches
  • Orchids - Elegant and durable, excellent for bridal bouquets

Timing Your Wedding Flowers

Order your flowers at least 4-6 weeks in advance, especially during peak wedding season (December through April). This ensures we can source the freshest blooms and create custom arrangements that match your vision perfectly.

Seasonal flowers in St. Lucia

Best Seasonal Flowers in St. Lucia: What's Blooming Now

St. Lucia's tropical climate means we have access to beautiful flowers year-round, but certain blooms are at their peak during specific seasons. Understanding what's in season helps you get the freshest, most vibrant flowers at the best prices.

In this post, we'll explore the seasonal flowers available in St. Lucia and how to incorporate them into your arrangements.

Best Seasonal Flowers in St. Lucia: What's Blooming Now

Year-Round Favorites

Thanks to our tropical climate, many flowers bloom throughout the year in St. Lucia. These include hibiscus, bougainvillea, and various types of orchids. These reliable blooms form the foundation of many of our arrangements.

Seasonal Highlights

Dry Season (December - May): This is when many tropical flowers are at their peak. You'll find an abundance of frangipani, heliconia, and anthuriums. This is also the best time for weddings, as flowers last longer in the cooler, drier weather.

Rainy Season (June - November): While we still have beautiful flowers available, the humidity can affect some delicate blooms. However, this is when many native flowers thrive, including wild ginger and various tropical foliage.

Local vs. Imported

At Flower Shack, we prioritize locally grown flowers when possible. Not only does this support local growers, but local flowers are often fresher and more affordable. We supplement with imported flowers for special occasions and when specific blooms are requested.

What's Available Right Now

Currently in January, we're seeing beautiful blooms of:

  • Hibiscus in various colors
  • Frangipani (white and yellow)
  • Birds of Paradise
  • Ginger flowers
  • Various orchids

Flower care tips

How to Make Your Flowers Last Longer: Expert Care Tips

You've invested in beautiful flowers, and you want them to last as long as possible. With the right care, your fresh flowers can stay vibrant for days or even weeks longer. Here are our professional tips for extending the life of your blooms.

These simple techniques work for all types of flowers, from bouquets to arrangements, and are especially important in St. Lucia's tropical climate.

How to Make Your Flowers Last Longer: Expert Care Tips

1. Fresh Water is Key

Change the water in your vase every 2-3 days. In St. Lucia's warm climate, bacteria can grow quickly in standing water, which shortens flower life. Use lukewarm water, as flowers absorb it better than cold water.

2. Trim the Stems

Before placing flowers in water, trim about 1-2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This creates a larger surface area for water absorption. Re-trim every few days when you change the water.

3. Remove Foliage Below Water Line

Any leaves or foliage that sit below the water line will rot and create bacteria. Remove these before arranging your flowers to keep the water clean.

4. Keep Flowers Cool

While we can't control the Caribbean heat, try to keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances. A cool, shaded spot will help them last longer.

5. Use Flower Food

When we deliver your flowers, we include a packet of flower food. This contains nutrients and antibacterial agents that help flowers last longer. Always follow the instructions on the packet.

6. Avoid Fruit

Keep your flowers away from ripening fruit. Fruits release ethylene gas, which causes flowers to age faster. This is especially important in tropical climates where fruit is often present.

7. Mist Delicate Flowers

Some delicate flowers benefit from a light misting with water. This helps them stay hydrated, especially in our dry season. Use a spray bottle and mist lightly once a day.

Special Tips for Tropical Flowers

For tropical flowers like hibiscus and frangipani:

  • They prefer slightly warmer water than traditional flowers
  • Some tropical blooms are sensitive to chlorine - use filtered water if possible
  • Keep them out of air conditioning drafts

With these tips, your flowers should last significantly longer. If you have questions about caring for specific flowers, don't hesitate to reach out to us!
